Definition: An axial-flow pump is a flow pump that features an axial impeller. This means that the impeller is installed parallel to the pump shaft in the casing. Together with the radial pump, the side channel pump and the diagonal-flow pump, the axial-flow pump belongs to the design of the flow pump. Today, they are more often referred to as centrifugal pumps. All four types deliver fluid media based on the same principle, namely fluidic processes. The fluid flows freely through the pump; there are no valves or flaps. The casing of an axial-flow pump features a tubular design. Given this type of design, the volume flow does not have to be diverted. A fixed diffuser is located behind the rotor.

What are axial-flow pumps used for?

Axial-flow pumps are often used if large volume flows have to be delivered or the medium requires a careful delivery. Furthermore, it is possible to magnetically drive the pump by means of a motor that is hermetically sealed from the medium. As a result, axial-flow pumps are also suitable for the delivery of hazardous or aggressive media.
