A German corrugated cardboard factory with locations in Germany and France has been producing corrugated base papers from 100% recycled paper for over 50 years. These serve as the basis for the manufacturing of various packaging solutions such as corrugated boxes, die-cut packaging, and folding cartons.
The special structure of corrugated cardboard – consisting of wave and flat papers – gives it stability and cushioning effect. The heart of production is the corrugated cardboard plant (WPA), where the paper layers are heated, moistened, glued, dried, and cut.
Task
A central component of cardboard production is the adhesive based on natural starch, which binds the paper layers together. Until now, pneumatic diaphragm pumps have been used for its transport and circulation within the WPA. However, these caused high noise levels and a comparatively high energy consumption.
The goal was to find a more efficient, quieter, and energy-saving solution for adhesive transport that is also robust against changing viscosities and can be flexibly regulated.
Solution
Use of ABEL Electromechanical Diaphragm Pumps in the Corrugated Board Plant
The solution consisted of using electromechanical diaphragm pumps (EM pumps) from the company ABEL. These double-acting pumps are electrically driven and are characterized by mechanical membrane deflection. Compared to the previous pneumatic pressure pumps, they operate significantly quieter, as the typical venting noise is eliminated.
Another advantage lies in energy efficiency: electrically driven pumps have a high efficiency and consume significantly less energy – an important factor in continuous operation. In addition, the ABEL pumps are frequency-controlled and can be accurately adjusted in their flow rate independent of back pressure. Their insensitivity to viscosity fluctuations makes them particularly suitable for transporting warm starch paste (35–40 °C).
The first pump was installed in the summer of 2011. Since then, seven more identical pumps have been put into operation, allowing the entire glue transport in this corrugated cardboard plant to be successfully converted to electric drive.
